Jill in Japan

Culture Festival

Another year, another Culture Festival. Each homeroom class or club plans an event or activity. Some classes perform skits, some make and display a large project, and others have interactive activities and games set up.

This was Sarah’s first Culture Festival.

Haha, my students think the Statue of Liberty is near Canada.

Sarah and I teamed up for Mogura Tataki, or “Whack a Mole” game. But, instead of moles, it was alligator heads coming out of a cave. We got first place and remained undefeated. The previous 1st place team even came back and unsuccessfully tried to beat our record. If you can’t read it, my name looks like ジル. Sarah’s is セイラ.

Next was Ball Sukui or “Ball Fishing”. I was given a “net” made of a plastic ring with a handle and tissue paper. The goal is to scoop as many plastic balls out of a kiddie pool in 1 minute as possible. The difficulty is that the tissue paper net tears apart almost immediately. At big Japanese festivals, this is done with live goldfish instead of balls. Yeah, tied for 1st :)

The last game was shooting targets with a rubber band gun. I tied for 3rd place.
